PKM-1, PKM-2, ODC-3: The Cultivar Nobody Puts on the Invoice

PKM-1, PKM-2 and ODC-3 look alike in a bag of leaf powder, but pod size, oil yield and measured nutrient readings trace back to which line a farm planted.

Ask a buyer what “moringa” means on an invoice and most will describe a single commodity, the way “coffee” would read without arabica or robusta attached. In practice, nearly every commercial hectare feeding the world moringa trade traces back to a small number of named lines bred or selected in Tamil Nadu, India. Which one a farm planted predicts pod size, oil yield per kilogram of seed, how long a tree stays productive before replanting, and, according to the one published head-to-head comparison, measurable differences in protein, mineral and antioxidant readings.

Three lines account for most of what moves through export channels: PKM-1, the reference cultivar most agronomy research is built on; PKM-2, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University’s higher-yield successor bred for pod economics; and ODC-3, a farmer-selected perennial with a pedigree that owes nothing to a university breeding program. Most shipping documents never distinguish between them, a blind spot that shows up later as inconsistent yield, oil content and nutrient readings from one shipment to the next.

PKM-1, the reference cultivar

PKM-1, short for Periyakulam-1, was developed at the Horticultural College and Research Institute, part of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, in the town of Periyakulam. TNAU’s Agritech Portal puts the reference yield for annual moringa, the crop PKM-1 defines, at 50 to 55 tonnes of fresh pods per hectare, roughly 220 pods per tree per year, with harvest beginning in the fourth month after transplanting.

  • Climate preference: 25 to 30 degrees Celsius
  • Soil: deep sandy loam, pH 6.5 to 8

Because PKM-1 is the line most published agronomy studies use as their baseline, many of the nutrient figures buyers cite for moringa leaf powder actually describe this one genetic line, not moringa in general. A 2019 ultra-high-density planting trial on PKM-1, published by Ponnuswami and Alli Rani in Advances in Plants and Agriculture Research, found that spacing and treatment shifted dry-leaf composition considerably. The widest tested spacing, 40 x 20 centimeters, combined with an organic humic-acid application, produced the trial’s highest readings for iron, 96.8 mg per 100 grams, and ascorbic acid, 133.63 mg per 100 grams. The single highest calcium reading in the trial, 2,052 mg per 100 grams, came instead from a tighter 10 x 15 centimeter spacing paired with the same humic-acid treatment, evidence that no one spacing regime maximized every nutrient at once.

The lesson for buyers reading a nutrition panel: cultivar sets the ceiling, but agronomic practice still decides what actually ends up in the bag.

PKM-2, bred for pod economics

PKM-2 is TNAU’s follow-on release, aimed at growers selling into the fresh-pod vegetable market as well as leaf and oil channels. Per the Agritech Portal, PKM-2 posts the highest documented productivity of the TNAU releases, 138 tonnes per hectare, achieved at the tightest recommended spacing of 1.2 x 1.2 meters, with main shoots pinched at 80 days after sowing. Read that 138 as a ceiling from the spacing trial rather than a farm average. Seed-trade listings more commonly quote about 98 tonnes per hectare as the working number for the variety.

Commercial seed-multiplier listings, a lower-tier trade source but a consistent one across vendors, describe PKM-2 pods running 120 to 130 centimeters long and 150 to 200 grams each, both longer and heavier than a typical PKM-1 pod, with 400 to 500 pods produced per tree annually and flowering beginning 90 to 100 days after sowing. The same listings put seed oil content at 38 to 42 percent, a figure relevant to anyone sourcing moringa seeds for cold pressing.

Pod length and oil percentage are cultivar-linked traits, not generic moringa characteristics. A buyer sourcing seed for cold-pressed moringa oil gets a different oil yield per kilogram depending on whether the origin farm planted PKM-1 or PKM-2 stock, a distinction that rarely survives the trip from farm gate to purchase order.

ODC-3, the farmer-selected perennial

ODC-3 carries an entirely different pedigree. It is not a TNAU cross but a farmer-selected line traced to Oddanchatram, a vegetable-market town in Tamil Nadu’s Dindigul district that gives the variety its name, described in a 2020 nutrition-journal review as a “farmer variety.”

Where PKM-1 and PKM-2 are grown as short-cycle crops and replanted every few years, ODC-3 is perennial. Trade press coverage of Cumbum Valley growers, reported by Krishi Jagran, describes an economic tree life of more than ten years, with mature trees producing more than 1,000 fruits annually and yield trending upward year over year rather than resetting each time a plot is replanted. That tops the 600 to 800 fruits per year reported in a 2020 review published in Insights in Nutrition and Metabolism, which also describes the variety as perennial, cluster-bearing and drought-resistant. Cluster bearing means fruit sets in bunches, which cuts harvest labor per kilogram gathered.

The drought-resistance label deserves a footnote. The same Krishi Jagran grower guidance puts water demand at roughly four litres per tree per day and calls for alternating wet and dry spells to trigger heavy flowering. Tolerating dry conditions and producing well under them are not the same claim.

That 2020 review is also careful to hedge its own findings on composition:

Despite the fact that no rigorous clinical trial has tested its efficacy for treating under-nutrition, the adoption of ODC-3 continues to increase.

That caution belongs in any discussion of ODC-3’s reported nutrient profile. Reported composition and demonstrated health effect are two different things, and the researchers who study this variety say so themselves.

The one study that puts them side by side

Most cultivar comparisons in the moringa literature are indirect: one paper measuring PKM-1 here, another measuring a different variety there, with no shared growing conditions to compare against. The exception is Farooq et al., published in Plants (Basel) on October 30, 2021, which grew an unimproved conventional check alongside PKM-1, PKM-2, ODC and a fifth cultivar called “Jaffna” under the same conditions and ran protein, mineral and antioxidant assays across all five.

The ranking held consistent across every measure tested: Jaffna scored highest, followed by PKM-1, then PKM-2, then ODC, with the unimproved conventional check trailing all four selected or bred lines every time. Total soluble protein at the mature growth stage ranged from 0.64 micrograms per milliliter in the conventional check to 0.94 micrograms per milliliter in Jaffna. FRAP antioxidant readings ran the same order and spread much wider, from 2.86 micrograms per milliliter in the conventional check to 29.39 micrograms per milliliter in Jaffna at a matched extract concentration.

Those are measured findings from one comparative trial, not blanket claims about what any variety does for the body. But they are the clearest evidence available that cultivar identity, not just growing region or processing method, moves the numbers a buyer cares about.

Why cultivar identity matters at the buyer’s desk

India dominates world moringa trade by a wide margin. Trade-data aggregation from Export Import Data puts the country’s 2022 moringa powder exports at roughly 10,060 metric tons, an estimated 80 percent of global demand. By 2024, export value stood at roughly 9 million dollars, with the United States alone absorbing about 6.47 million dollars of that total. Shipment counts climbed through that period: 818 shipments in the twelve months through October 2024, up 16 percent year over year, with October 2024 alone posting 73 shipments, up 52 percent against the same month a year earlier.

That volume ran through 229 Indian exporters transacting against 452 international buyers, on invoices that, per the same trade data, usually read simply “moringa leaf powder” or “moringa oil.” Cultivar identity is exactly the variable that gets lost in that gap between farm gate and finished product label.

The practical takeaway for anyone sourcing moringa: ask which cultivar, or cultivar mix, went into a given lot. It predicts pod size and oil yield. It predicts perenniality and how consistent supply will stay from one year to the next. And per the one head-to-head study available, it predicts measurable differences in protein, mineral and antioxidant readings between one bag of powder and the next.
